3-week Teen Leadership Program

The YMCA of Northern Utah partners with Summit Journeys to provide adventure leadership programs for youth ages 14-17. The YMCA and Summit Journeys have teamed up to provide a new and innovative curriculum for the Leaders in Training and Counselors in Training programs. These programs train youth to be leaders in outdoor spaces, as well as in their personal lives at home. Our joint programs offer youth opportunities to explore lessons in leadership through self-reflection, group dynamics, and resilience in the face of challenge.

Additionally, our leadership programs deepen participants connection and awareness of the outdoors through lessons in biology, local ecology, astronomy, and local flora and fauna identification.

Wasatch Wildflower Festival

Enjoy an easy 45 minute stroll or [up to] a 3 hour challenging hike with our trained Wasatch Wildflower Guides…or grab a map of the route and head out on your own. Naturalists will be stationed along hiking routes to share information about particular points of interest. Most hikes take place at a gentle pace to accommodate wildflower viewing and discussion, but some are longer in distance and time.  Difficulty ratings of “kids, easy, moderate, or advanced” are provided based on trail difficulty or length, not level of wildflower knowledge.

Footing can be loose in many places, so please wear appropriate shoes.  All hikes are at high elevation.  Please plan to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, walking stick or any other items to ensure your own comfort and needs.  Prepare with layers in case of changing weather during the day.

Local Event: Roots & Routes

Roots & Routes

The 2019 Utah Outdoor Recreation Summit is a three-day event held at the Dixie Center in beautiful St. George. You’re invited to come and be a part of an important outdoor recreation discussion. You will join local stakeholders, industry professionals and land managers that play a role in Utah’s outdoor recreation community – in the fastest growing county in the U.S.

Network during one of our attendee activities such as a road or mountain bike ride, OHV ride, or a kayaking or paddleboarding at a local reservoir. Get inspired and stay informed about current outdoor recreation issues in one of our five educational tracks. Give back to local recreation areas and meet new people in the industry during a service project. We hope to see you there!

Come early to enjoy some outdoor recreation activities, meet other summit-goers and experience Washington County’s bounty of amazing recreation amenities. Check out our outdoor recreation activities below, and find out more details in the activity section of registration. Most activities will cost $20–these funds go towards helping students come experience the conference for a free or reduced ticket price.
